This week our EDCI336 class took a field trip to the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry (PSII). We were able to sit down and chat with the founder and principal, Jeff Hopkins, interact with students and take a self-guided tour throughout the school. PSII is a high school located in downtown Victoria. The students at this school cover the entirety of the BC Curriculum through inquiry-based learning. The student body is a total of 95 students accompanied by 5 educators, whose expertise range from a wide array of subjects. Because students can decide what they want to learn about and can learn about the said topic as well as showcase their learning through a variety of media, students are more involved in their learning – education becomes more personal. This learning style was an entirely new world for me. I had never before this semester worked on an inquiry project; therefore, I had my reservations about how individual interest would ultimately link to the curriculum. However, following this visit, I am convinced that inquiry is a magnificent tool for inspiring learners to be actively involved in their own education. I hope when moving into my teaching career to invite inquiry into the classroom.
